There are 2 protruding indentations on the handle, one on top and one on the bottom. If you are working with a smaller object, the square will not be correct unless both indentations are adjacent to the workpiece. If you sanded them down, the square would work fine, but the scale would be off by about 1/16th, so. A simple tool that I love to use all the time, but this one just isn't for me. Update 10/30/2013 I really don't like this tool. I have been using this square style for construction for many years. I made a few mistakes due to the dimples on the plastic. There are 2 indentations on each end so if your board isn't the full width of the handle you won't be square. All too often I just don't think I can quickly find and draw a square line as I have to double check because of this weird design. I am lowering my rating and do not recommend this tool. It's good quality but not a very good square in my opinion.
