Before I bought this I didn't think there was a big difference between hay suppliers. The second cut is the second cut, right? I was so wrong! I used to use Kaytee or VitaKraft because they were cheap and easy to find in stores or online, but decided I wanted to shop. I chose High Desert after comparing prices, container sizes, and the ability to subscribe and save. When I opened the first box, I saw an amazing difference in quality compared to "famous brands". This hay looks and feels fresh, is soft, smells nice and has very few (if any) thick stalks. My piglets ate it and I seriously felt like I was keeping that from them. They eat 100% of this hay from their hay rack which is amazing considering how many other brands have left them behind (stalks too thick/hard). In their hay basket they like to play around with this hay, rummage around for the food I hide for them and sleep in it (it's really so soft and fluffy) whereas with other brands they only use the top layer. There are also almost no cocktails/powder particles at the bottom of this box. I subscribe to this and save and get a four pound box every month which is the perfect amount. I have 3 guinea pigs and they have hay baskets to play/nest in and feeding fences. I use a plastic container with a lid to move half the box around for easy refills, then put the box away with other spares until needed. I really can't say enough good things about High Desert. I wish I knew about them sooner! I feel good knowing I'm supporting a small farm, the quality is miles ahead of the big brands and this is a really high quality product.
