I have had many knife sets in my day, and this is easily my favorite!Looks:The smooth dark wood base has a quality feel, and good weight. The corners are also rounded, which is a nice touch. From a looks perspective, the knives look pretty standard - a blade with a handle. But again does not look cheap at all. The scissors are worth noting - usually the scissors in these sets are a cheap ridged plastic. These look much nicer, with a rubber style coating.Quality:The wood block is not fake (or they did a really good job of making fake wood). Carries some weight, and definitely solid. I can see it lasting many years. The blades and handle appear very durable - only problem I can see is dull blades after a while - luckily this unit has the sharpener. As mentioned above, the scissors are much more durable than the standard ones that come with these kits. The sharpener also appears durable, and was built to last. For example - the unit allows you to change the sharpening stone. I don't know if I will ever need to do that (I am a bit of a slacker when it comes to sharpening), but the point being - this set was not designed to be "disposable".Functionality:This is where the knife set really stands out. Several notable features that other sets do not have. You can certainly go out and buy an expensive knife set, but not with these features:- I never liked the sharpening rods that come with sets - to the point where I would put up with a dull blade before sharpening with the rod. This unit is very innovative and takes care of the problem. You simply insert a (clean dry) knife into the assembly and it "locks". You pull up and down on the side lever 10 times, and release the knife. Rinse off the knife and you are done! So easy!- My old unit would move around on the countertop. Part because it was cheap and lightweight, but also because the bottom was smooth. This unit has suction cups, so an accidental bump or force won't move it at all. At the same time, it is easy to release the suction cups and move it somewhere else if needed.- Again back to the scissors. Not only are they well made, but you can open them all the way, and they will separate into halves. Makes it easy to clean or other use.- Sharp. I had two cantaloupe that I needed to cut up. I tried my old knife on one, and the new knife on the other. With the old knife, I had to push on both ends of the knife with some pressure to puncture the cantaloupe. Using the new knife, I could do the same task one handed and with very little pressure. Along with the easy sharpener, I am looking forward to years of easy cutting.Highly recommend!
