This is much easier for aquarium filters than pre-made carbon cartridges. They were the bane of my existence for a while because they have to be changed every 4 weeks because the carbon stops working, but that's where all the good bacteria live, so I had to cut the blue thread off the cartridge, remove each piece of carbon and put the used thread in the filter with a new cartridge so as not to break the cycle; every four weeks. Now I can just crop and paste it. It doesn't need to be changed until it falls apart. I just rinse it out a bit with used tank water when it gets dirty and put it back in. If I REALLY need to replace it, I cut another piece, stick it in the old one, and then take the old one out after it's had time to colonize the new thread (about two weeks, especially if I add some live bacteria) . So much easier and, damn it, a lot cheaper! Also, I'm a strong believer in not using any chemicals in my tanks, so being carbon free is a plus for me. :)
