This is much easier for aquarium filters than pre-made carbon cartridges. They were the bane of my existence for a while because they have to be changed every 4 weeks because the carbon stops working, but that's where all the good bacteria live, so I had to cut the blue thread off the cartridge, remove each piece of carbon and put the used thread in the filter with a new cartridge so as not to break the cycle; every four weeks.
