If you just want to scrape off paint there are cheaper alternatives. But for tops it's perfect. First, it comes with stainless steel blades - regular blades will rust quickly and should be thrown away. After use, the blade should be removed and turned over to protect the cutting edge as supplied. THEN the protective cap snaps into place. Otherwise it falls off. I find this to be a safety feature worth the extra step, especially around small children. To get the smoothest, burr-free edge, I lightly sharpened the edge of the blade on a DMT greenstone (equivalent to about 2000 grit). It does an excellent job of removing tiny hard bits of cooked food from the cooktop glass top. Honing can certainly extend the life of your blades significantly. Sharpening was done with a blade fixed in the handle - it was easy to maintain the correct sharpening angle. This is for cleaning the top of my range and is not used for other cleaning jobs.
