Review on Patriot Viper VPN100 512GB M.2 PCIe Gen3 x4 SSD - Fast & Reliable Storage Solution by Philip Davenport

EDIT (10/20/2020): Unfortunately, the hard disk no longer works. I won't lower my rating just yet as honestly it can only be my fault. I upgraded the GPU to a 5700 XT but my PSU was only 550W. Given that some forums have shown that this minimum PSU should be fine I figured I wouldn't have a problem. However, a week after using it, I kept getting BSODs until this happened. I changed the motherboard and GPU and everything was still the same. However, after changing the PSU to 850W and using other NVME drives, it worked fine again for my PC. While I can't rule out the possibility of this drive dying on its own since this NVME drive also uses PCIe along with the GPU and it only happened after using a newer GPU, the PSU may not have been able to handle it either. . both. Also, even established brands like WD can have unexpected issues - I remember the first reviews of the WD SN750 when they came out here on Revain and one person immediately reported a rejection. So I'm leaving this update just to let you guys know you're ready. I've been using it as a drive for everything for three months currently, so far it's working great and expect it to last until this review is updated. I saw a mention of Patriot with a bad reputation due to news in the comments from Anandtech as well as some PC component sellers here in the Philippines. Their line of burst SATA SSDs reportedly had a higher failure rate. I understood that while also thinking that the components they put in here were reliable - the Phison E12 controller and Toshiba NAND memory - and that regardless of the Patriot's reputation, bad or just plain normal for the Patriot too It would still be scarier to drop that SSD and ruin yourself even more, so I thought getting this was worth the risk. I was also drawn to the cool heatsink and packaging (although Tom's Hardware said the heatsink wasn't that efficient). Keep in mind that the heatsink is non-removable so it ONLY works best on desktops and if your motherboard doesn't have a built-in heatsink for M.2. SSD first. If you want a good NVME M.2 SSD without a heatsink, you can just buy Silicon Power P34A80, MyDigitalSSD BPX Pro, Addlink S70, Teamgroup MP34, Corsair MP510, PNY CS3030 or other Phison E12 Toshiba combo. go cheap. Finally, a few words about photos and videos: 1) CrystalDiskMark 6.0.2 test shows 3470.2 MB/s read and 3051.8 MB/s write (sequential) with write caching enabled for Windows. This supposedly improves system performance, but only marginally shortens the lifespan of the SSD. 2) SSD same as B450M Mortar. 3) CrystalDiskMark 6.0.2 benchmark shows 3470.4 MB/s reading and 653.3 MB/s writing. (serial) with write caching disabled for Windows to reduce caching and increase SSD lifespan. I was surprised when this happened and thought it was a possible defect or something because the disc dropped so deep into the record, but on further google searches it seems normal. In fact, the actual write speed performance is even higher. 4) Disk information from HWInfo itself. I don't have a UPS yet and there was a problem with my electrical outlet at home that was causing several unsafe shutdowns. 5) Video showing how I copy the 14.2GB Vampyr games folder to a folder called Steam to test the Steam folder, I already had it installed just didn't want to mess with it). The source is a 128GB Samsung PM961 SSD in a Plugable USB-C NVME enclosure. It copied it in 18 seconds, hit 843 MB/s, and mostly stuck at 800 MB/s until the end. This is the case with write caching disabled, meaning that CrystalDiskMark's sequential write information doesn't tell the full story.
