I used this type of contraption to prevent house cats from wandering through an open door by placing a cushion on the inside sill. In my experience, the shock is expected to be mildly uncomfortable and paired with an audible cue to teach the cat to avoid the mat. when bought new and with new batteries, the shock is very soft and didn't bother a barefoot 14 year old with the max setting. I think it's too weak to be an effective deterrent, I would have preferred a higher range of power. and tuning the sound dolmen so that it can also be tuned to the environment. There's also no low-battery indicator, the system simply shuts down without warning when the batteries are getting low. I don't know what the cut off voltage is, it's not listed in the manuals or on the box.
