I bought this sharpening plate to be able to sharpen and level the spine of wood planes. This is the first diamond plate I've tried. I have used water stones for most of my life. The first iron went great. He quickly got the hang of smoothing the back of the iron with 400 grit, flipping the plate over and finishing with 1000 grit. I was impressed how well it worked. Started with a second iron which smooths the back and it just doesn't cut on the 400 grit side. Had to end up with a 1000 grit side that cuts faster than the 400 grit side. The entire 400 grit side would be polished will. I sent the record back the next day. What a big disappointment.
