Fast, quiet, reliable and cool

This is my sixth WD Gold hard drive. I love her. I have dozens of hard drives. I know what it's like when a hard drive fails. Even with backups, it's a pain. This is unlikely with WD Gold drives as they are the most reliable drives in the industry. I recommend ALL users to buy these enterprise drives and avoid so-called consumer drives. They will probably give you a lot less trouble as they have the best MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) on the market today. It costs a few extra dollars. This drive also works very cool. Unlike my WD Black discs, very HOT to the touch, these gold discs work very well even when recorded at 100%. I dumped almost 9TB on this drive in one fell swoop and the drive never went above 100ยฐF and runs at 95ยฐF under normal heavy use and around 90ยฐF when idle. This is indoors with a constant ambient temperature of 27 ยฐ C. I've used at least a hundred discs in the last ten years. The first enterprise class drives I bought 10 years ago that ran at 10,000 RPM, ran 24/7 and still work today. These WD Gold drives have an MTBF that is 2.5 times higher than the original drives. I value reliability. ADDED 9 November 2020 I should note that you should make sure you buy the disc at retail, not from the OEM. Western Digital does not guarantee the OEM drive. OEM drives are usually cheaper, but getting support in the event of a problem depends entirely on the seller's willingness to replace the failed drive. To ensure you receive a retail disc on Revain, make sure "Seller" or "Seller" and "Ships" are both "Revain".

Pros
  • Specially designed for data center and enterprise storage applications
Cons
  • Slightly dented
