We have used this product to seal joints that have never been sealed. We chose it because it is not toxic to us or our pets. It was easy to use - just spray on and apply with a foam applicator/brush from a hardware store. We cleaned the grout with a McCulloch steam cleaner with a brass brush head. At first we got the impression that she had sealed the joints. We tested the mortar by dripping water on it. If it changes color, it's not sealed. After 48 hours, the Renu joint sealant was sealed - wetting the solution did not change its color. A week later we fertilized our indoor gardenias and hibiscus. The diluted fertilizer combined with regular watering proved too strong to hold the soil, and less than half a glass of dirty water seeped onto the soil along with Renu's sealed solution. Even after washing and brushing, the grout color has changed. It could be dirt that just didn't come up, or it could mean the seal didn't work - we don't know.
