This is the best device I've found for experimenting with I2C devices directly from a desktop or laptop. Either this or a full-size I2CDriver is invaluable for finding a way to bypass a new I2C device without having to go through an intermediate Raspberry Pi or Arduino. You can use the GUI, CLI or Python or C to write test streams. I've tried a lot of this type of stuff and this works best for me. I use Debian or Ubuntu Linux.
