Review on πŸ’₯ PNY XLR8 CS3040 1TB M.2 NVMe Gen4 x4 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - High-Speed Performance for Next-Level Gaming and Productivity by Chris Walker

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Speed is better than Gen3 but not Gen4 yet. (By the way, Random R/W is so bad.)

From AIDA64 says PNY CS3040 1TB Controller is Phison PS5016. (Oddly, there is no physical information about the SSD on the board, so I had to check "PCI Devices" to find out which driver was installed.) This SSD was a big disappointment, although it performs better in sequential read/write. compared to my old 970 EVO 1TB (last second picture), but for general development, random read/write is not very suitable. This is sometimes even worse than the 970 EVO at 70% memory used. The other issue is heat, you absolutely need a heatsink for this SSD, it gets very hot if you write/read for more than 10 minutes (90C without heatsink). A review in Tomshardware shows that this controller performs very poorly in sustained sequential write performance (which can drop to 600MB/s), but I haven't tested it personally so I'm giving it as a benchmark.

Pros
  • Delivery was very fast
Cons
  • For old
