Poor design. The carbon pad sandwiched between the metal mesh impedes airflow and the fan cannot effectively push the air through the filter. Our (newer) Broan hood directs air out but hardly draws smoke and grease out of the kitchen. Now everything in the kitchen is covered with a light coating of greasy kitchen dust. We end up removing the filter while preparing smoky/fatty foods to allow the fan to do its job. Never had this problem with the simple line filters we used. I will stop buying charcoal filters, I will go back to the basic ones
