Review on πŸ”’ Ultimate Rim Protection: Stan's NoTubes Rim Tape for Rim Interior - 10 Yards by Josh Allen

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Worked great for me

A bit surprised by the negative reviews and it got me thinking about using Stans tape. But I bought it as it was the only rim tape I could deliver the next day. I have a set of Stans Arch MK3 tubeless bikes that were already tubeless ready when I bought them 2 years ago. After recently bursting my fatigue I put on a new tire but I kept losing air. Noticing it was leaking through the spoke holes, I took the tire off and found that the existing rim tape had snapped in a couple of places (I think I was too aggressive with my tire arms when I originally repaired it at the track was also bent in places). Areas to allow air to escape through the spoke holes. So I removed the existing tape and spent a lot of time cleaning the rim to make sure the new tape would stick well. This involved removing all of the old sealer from the rim (after washing with Dawn I used Goo b Gone to get rid of the dried sealer) and then wiping the entire rim with alcohol. After making sure I got rid of all the old sealant and fibers from the rag I used, I was ready to go. Applying the tape (I used 27mm rim tape with 25mm internal width as Stans recommended) was fairly easy and I had no issues with adhesion. I also used just one coat with a slight valve opening overlap. pressed the tape along the edge on either side around the entire wheel and also down the middle just to make sure the tape was as tight as I could make it. Insert the valve and fix it with the nut. Put the tire back on using the sealant that was left before I replaced the tape. Inflated to 35psi with a hand pump and I had no trouble getting the tire bead to fit. Checked for leaks, couldn't find it. I'll be leaving later today but don't expect any problems. The only reasons I can think of for someone having trouble are: (1) Do you have "tubeless ready" rims and tires? Otherwise this tape will not work. (2) Are you using the correct tape width for your rim width? The tape should be slightly wider, ie 2mm. (3) Is your rim REALLY clean? As with anything else, grip is only good if the tire (or your hands) is clean and free of oil/grease/dirt/dust. (4) Has the tape been stored properly? As soon as I removed the first layer of tape from the roll I found that it was "tacky" but I know that if I had left the roll in my garage for a few seasons it probably wouldn't have had the same adhesion properties. For those new to tubeless running, there are plenty of videos to guide you through the steps.

Pros
  • High marks for grip and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other alternatives
