Broke after 20 rivets

Had to get this to install 100 rivets 3/16" SS. If you've ever tried to do it by hand - it's impossible. I've installed a lot of rivets by hand , but 3/16" stainless steel is a different matter. All was going well until the 20th rivet when it started making a terrible noise. The drive clutch had failed on part of the drilling motor. It screamed, but nothing happened. To set a few emergency rivets, it's possible to remove the bit and attach it to a quarter-hex on a screwdriver or drill. Turn clockwise to "pop" the rivet and twist to push out the spent rivet shank. This part of the tool was OK The motor body does not turn the screw when the screwdriver tip is inserted. "Rat-tat-tat" is clearly a clutch problem. I liked the fact that this tool is interchangeable with Makita batteries and the concept of the tool seems right but finally I have work to do and I'm going to the cargo port when it opens in the morning for a guaranteed airgun pick up. Why not just buy a Makita rivet gun? At $1700. That might be the price Makita has to come up with to make a reliable battery-powered shotgun. You have a good reputation to uphold. But that's too cool for me. I'll try another supposedly reliable technology. Fortunately, Revain will give you an account of this adventure.

Pros
  • Rivet safe
Cons
  • Requires socket
