Review on ๐ŸŽจ Wagner Spraytech PaintEater 0513040 Electric Palm Grip Orbital Disc Sander Kit for Efficient Paint Removal and Sanding by Orlando Mohr

Works as advertised

My old house has 13 old oak doors. They have about 8 coats of paint on each door - 4 latex paint on top and 4 oil paint on bottom as far as I can tell. I've tried random orbit sanders, belt sanders, paint thinner, and heat guns. They can penetrate all latex, but take hours to get through enamel that's been on it for decades. I've had the most success with a heat gun and scraper, but it still took me about 8-10 hours to get the paint off the door. I bought Paint Eater and tried it for about 15 minutes today. It chewed through the latex like it was nothing, and after a few passes it was through the enamel. I finished about 1/2 of a side of the door - definitely saved time and stripped it down to bare wood. I have several complaints. The engine speed is 2600 rpm, so if you walk past the paint it sometimes bites really hard and throws you around a bit - it caught me off guard the first time and it nearly flew off my desk. You definitely need 2 hands and a firm grip to hold this thing. It spins so quickly that if you leave it in one spot for too long, the paint will melt, which will only spin the paint and clog your pad. Also, after just 15 minutes it was getting so hot it was uncomfortable holding the motor and smoke was coming out when I stopped - I suspect paint debris got stuck in the duct. All in all, a few complaints don't outweigh the time it just saved me before my little test tonight. The pads seem a bit pricey, but it will probably be about the same amount as the sanding discs I used on each door before.

Pros
  • High marks for hold and durability from testers
Cons
  • Will write later
