Review on Toshiba DR420 DVD Recorder Black by Franz Esquivel

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Exceptional value for a budget recorder

Considering the Toshiba DVD is less than $100 I think it's exceptionally cheap. In my case it does everything I need. It has a variety of outputs including component, S-Video and HDMI and I use all three. It also has a coaxial (digital) audio output, which my old unit didn't have - twice the price. Operation is easy. Just in case, I put in a DVD+RW that my Sony recorder had partially formatted before it crashed, and Toshiba formatted it quickly with no problems. In fact, it seems to format any type of drive I throw at it. Another big plus is that drives are formatted in a very short time. The manual is also very impressive with large and clear instructions. I also like the fact that it's broken down by popular topics. The only thing that confuses me is that the display is incredibly small. It's actually quite difficult to tell if a device is on or off. But that's a little quirk. And some will certainly prefer the "unobtrusive" look that this recorder offers.

Pros
  • Playback: MP3, VCD, JPEG, Kodak Pic
Cons
  • Update Available
