Review on ๐Ÿ“€ Sony SLV-D500P DVD/VCR Combo: The Ultimate Multimedia Powerhouse by William Rothstein

Revainrating 3 out of 5

But okay for the price.

Received the Sony SLV-D500P DVD/VCR Combo this morning. Contrary to the experience of some other reviewers, my device has no noise issues at all. DVD and VCR picture quality is decent, but I have a couple of minor issues: 1) DVD output doesn't offer 3:2 reverse conversion for watching movie DVDs [movies] (which have a different original frame rate than the video frame rate). , & requires this feature to avoid nasty visual artifacts.) The Phillips combo offers this for the same price, but has received poor reviews for other reasons. 2) The VHS output does not have an S-Video out connector, forcing you to use the lower quality composite or antenna out connectors. 3) In order to use the DVD player's component video outputs (which give the best quality), you need to turn on the 'Progressive' setting, which despite the button for it on the front panel is extremely difficult and often requires repeated attempts. (And the DVD output will be scrambled until you do so.) And then you have to turn it off again when using the VCR or the VCR picture will be scrambled! 4) The remote control is terrible! (The 32 buttons are exactly the same [tiny] size and shape, which do everything from selecting channels to controlling system settings.) Don't even try to use this in the dark! If you can afford the space, buy a separate DVD and VCR - you won't regret it as you can buy both for the same total cost. If you don't have space like I do, this will do.

Pros
  • Great Price
Cons
  • Big and Chunky
