Review on ๐Ÿš— Fel Pro Rear Main Seal for Chevrolet 40640 by Scott Welch

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good sealing, special care during installation, READ INSTRUCTIONS!

Media failed to load. I renewed this seal during the gearbox overhaul. The truck runs, the Simmerring works great. Installation can be a bit confusing for people who have never used it. The sealing lip is different from the traditional rubber seal, and the seal is narrower than the original seal. Make sure the small, thin lip (dust seal) is facing away from the engine toward the gearbox. Also, the entire gasket is made of rubber or something almost like graphite, not steel, so you have to be careful not to deform it when you press it. However, since it is entirely rubber, it is easier to press in than traditional steel gaskets Just make sure you lower it fully and flat into the hole; use the installation tool when you push it into the housing and install the housing/seal in the motor not to deform, one more important thing to mention , which is difficult to understand because it goes against normal gasket installation methods: they DO NOT. I repeat, DO NOT use oil on this gasket or its mating surface. As I said, is this gasket a harder rubber material, possibly impregnated with graphite? If you're using oil, I've heard it's likely that some will leak. I have installed many of these (PTFE I believe is the material) mainly on Cummins diesel engines and Nev. Used oil and never had a leak. They come with vacuum test grease, I wipe it off, just make sure you don't leave lint on it. Explore it. PTFE.
