After you put a whole packet of brown sugar in a can, it turned rock hard. I couldn't even knock it off with a metal spoon. So I googled "how to soften brown sugar". One option is to put it in the microwave, but I couldn't do that because of the metal on the can. Another option I found was to purchase this item. After reading the reviews I decided to go for it. I valued less than $10, what have I got to lose? I soaked it in water the night I received it and then placed it on top of the brown sugar in the tin. The next morning the brown sugar was soft enough to use on oatmeal. Cute! (No pun intended) I only wish I had taken a "before" photo for publication. Money well spent!
