Review on Insignia NS-WBRDVD2 Blu Ray DVD Player with Wi-Fi: Enhance Your Home Entertainment Experience! by David Sanchez

Good equipment

I bought this refurbished through Revain at a very attractive price. The player itself looked good, everything was included except for the batteries for the remote control and there were a few stains on the remote control which showed it had been used before. Still not bad for a refurbished device. I was particularly interested in streaming Netflix because I have an old pre-HDMI 1080i CRT TV which Apple TV or Roku boxes don't support. As I had hoped, it worked well with my TV via the component output. Setup was quick and the player was easy to connect to my wireless network via WPS. I couldn't find any information on what Wi-Fi standard it supports, but it didn't seem to see my 802.11n 5GHz network while picking up my 802.11g/n network, so I'm guessing it's 802.11 g is . At first I was disappointed that the Netflix client didn't support search natively, but the player indicated that a firmware update was available. Updating the firmware over Wi-Fi sounded pretty risky, so I went to the Insignia website and downloaded the update. According to the manual, the player supports updates via the Internet, a USB stick or a burned CD. I couldn't get it to accept the update from my USB drive, so I went the CD route. The update went smoothly and the drive has an updated Netflix client which is more attractive and now includes the desired search function. There are quite long loading delays when browsing cover art, and there have been a few times I've gotten a "Can't connect to Netflix" message, but I've always managed to connect when I try again. I've streamed most HD movies from Netflix with no pauses or other issues. I'll probably try a wired connection to see if that affects browsing speeds. I've also tried Pandora, which runs smoothly, although there is a noticeable lag when loading each song. The DVD and Blu-ray playback tests also looked good, although I haven't done detailed DVD upscaling quality comparisons with my other Blu-ray player yet. But so far it looks like a very good buy for the price.

Pros
  • Blu-ray player and recorder
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
