Review on 20x20x1 Reusable Furnace Filter for Home by Ramon Hood

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Decent filter size slightly different

I clean air ducts for my job so I am confident in getting a quality air filter that does not restrict airflow which can cause other problems. The Merv 11 is great because it doesn't restrict airflow. The first thing I did was elevate this filter with a light/lamp about 5 feet away from me. I could see the light but nothing on the other side of the filter which usually means it has good density. The filter reminds me of car air filters that k&n makes, but maybe not in a thick, heavy, or dark color. The bezel is plastic and looks ok, but I wouldn't drop it, it looks like it could crack or break. I have used cheaper 3m filters which have not impressed me. When I replaced the air filter with a new one, I held my hand in front of the vent while the air was blowing before and after the change, I didn't notice any noticeable difference in airflow with my hand. Now for the bad and/or negative. Firstly it's made in China, I'd rather it was made in the USA. Second, the size I ordered is 20x20. I read some other reviews and some people said it was too small. I actually measured the size before installing, size 19 1/2 x 19 1/2. Now I went to the k&n website and it says they are smaller because each frame manufacturer has slightly different sizes. This is true to the point where there usually isn't a half size difference from frame to frame. Third, my air recirculation is in the ceiling and every time the air is turned on it lifts the filter up and makes a thumping noise and it makes a thumping noise when it falls back down. This may not be an issue if you are in a wall or floor. I'm going to use some 1/2 sided foam commonly used to seal doors and windows, which should help prevent up and down movement. I feel like they should have either provided some foam to make up the difference or they could have made some plastic parts that could adjust to make up the difference. They also recommend cleaning at least every 3 months. I have to say that I always recommend every 30 days in spring and autumn, you can probably walk for two months if it's not too hot or too cold. There are also many other variables that come into play. Overall the filter seems decent, for the price it's one of the best washable filters I've seen. Other filters I've used are about $30 for 6, so I changed mine monthly to save money throughout the year. Also, if you wash the filter, make sure it is completely dry before putting it back in. I recommend buying a decent cheap disposable filter and setting it up for 24 hours to make sure the other one is completely dry and then putting it back in.
