We didn't actually get this to check the temp and humidity in our home, although we plan to buy another just for that. We got it because my wife breeds Madagascar hissing cockroaches. Ironically, many moons ago I was a bouncer at a bar, but I'm afraid to face things like that lol. My wife and our daughter will keep them. But in order to grow them properly, you need to create comfortable conditions. These cockroaches can be kept at room temperature. But elevated temperatures and relatively high humidity ensure that they grow and reproduce much faster. This includes keeping the temperature in the terrarium at a certain level, as well as regularly spraying it with water to maintain a relatively high level of humidity. You can find a hygrometer at some pet stores or online. The problem we had was that it was difficult to see the true numbers. We ordered it specifically for use in terrariums because the display was very easy to read. The controls speak for themselves, even if they are not specially marked. It comes with a charging cable, although I found it came pre-charged and ready to use. The first thing you need to do is change the default temperature display from Celsius to Fahrenheit. The alarm clock is perfect if you take care of it on a specific schedule. But mainly we just wanted to be able to quickly check the temperature and humidity. We live in South Bay, an area known for its high humidity. I love baking and I can only cook some things (noodles) if the humidity inside is not particularly high. You should also slightly adjust certain aspects of baking (e.g. baking time) based on humidity. So having one of these is a great way to ensure you get the most out of your confectionary adventures. You can still invest in a dehumidifier, but the point is to know the exact humidity level in your kitchen in advance. So we'll be ordering another one, I'm happy with how well this one works.
