Rubber O-rings can be used not only for sinks and faucets.
I use these to attach grips to my 1911. They protect the wood from cracks caused by over-tightening the screws. They also help prevent spontaneous release of the grips. You can use a thread sealant like Locktite to hold the bolts in place, but it's almost too strong and makes the bolts difficult to remove if your 1911 needs careful maintenance. I ordered special grips for my 1911, they are very nice and these rubber washers keep them like new.
