Review on πŸ’Ύ Synology 8 Bay DiskStation DS1821+ (Diskless) | 8-Bay NAS Device with 4GB DDR4 RAM by Shawn Mortensen

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great little box NAS+

Still transferring files from my old DS409+ which will take a few days. However, I ran a quick read/write performance test. I'm using 4 WD Red 12TB drives in the SHR-2 which gives me just over 20TB and two slots are open for future expansion from my old 4 x 4TB red drives in the Raid-5. I'm getting 100-120MB/s read/write on the array (spinning disks, no SSDs), if you add SSDs it runs a bit faster, I'm also using 2 network ports in linked mode. Regarding the USB speed review comment. You're probably better off adding 10GB Ethernet, but if you're using spinning hard drives it doesn't make much of a difference since USB is faster than what you'll get from hard drives. First I set up a Plex server. Time that was relatively painless, also the reverse proxy support for http/https connections is really good, which allowed me to use a different hostname for the plex server, I also had to open the default plex port /forward so host/media detection works properly, but I think it might be related to my router/firewall. I installed Docker and enabled SSH, but haven't tested it yet. I have more RAM that won't arrive for a week and a half. I will update this review later. The Reverse Proxy Application Portal is a really nice addition and I'll be sure to use it in conjunction with Docker support for a couple of one-off apps that I'll be adding. I installed Plex through the native app. This is required to support hardware encoding and will probably install everything else via Docker as I don't want to mess up the base install too much. it will be very nice to be able to tinker with. The bonus is that I can host the Ubiquiti UniFi controller software in a semi-permanent home.
