Short lived defective plastic latch

I have had this gate for a few months now. Everything was fine at first, although the rest of the family struggled to get him to stay put. It started breaking within a month or so, but we were still able to use it. Today it is completely broken. The locking mechanism is defective and the gate is unusable. Another junk product I'm going to landfill. I have another gate that has stood for years - through three children and two dogs. This one didn't. I want to buy a gate (or any product for that matter) that will last.
