Just got three of these filters for my 2016.5 CX-5, the existing Mazda filter got dirty after only 5,000 miles. Went in well, and yes, the arrow appears to be upside down. In fact, there shouldn't be any difference in performance. I really doubt that carbon toppings will do much and probably saturated within a few hours of setting. Now I find it odd that consumers blame these filters for musty smells. This is strange to me. The air flow through them is about the same. I have an anemometer that I use to test HVAC ducts, so I wasn't just guessing like most here. That being said, Mazda is really bad at its AC drain lines and smells. I've also seen people who never turn off the A/C and let air blow through the A/C evaporator for about a minute before turning the car off. My CX-5 had it when I bought it (used). If you have automatic climate control, things get worse as the air conditioning is likely to stay on for much longer. Sorry, but a wet vaporizer will fail. It also happens in houses. There is no magic here. Just a dark, humid environment. No homeowner has ever blamed a house filter for a musty air conditioner smell, and neither should car owners. It doesn't make sense unless your filters get wet somehow.
