Latch works as intended

I have had a few footpegs. I bought Rubbermaid to replace another brand that failed while I was at it. Most reviewers say this is a very good footrest. I agree. Some reviewers are negative about the latch being loose. See attached photo 2. I put on my tech hat thinking it was by design and a safety measure. When the stool is in use, the latch hangs loosely from the bar about 1/8 inch. If for any reason the footrest begins to fold while you are standing on it, the latch on the crossbar will engage and prevent it from folding. The weight on the top step is carried by the crossbar. The faulty stool I replaced had a latch that looked similar and was tight, but the stool's integrity depended entirely on the latch. Little did I know the latch had shifted and the stool had collapsed while I was standing on it. A few swear words and a trash can did the trick. A nice feature from Rubbermaid is the "handle" height, which can help you balance when the stool isn't against a wall or closet. An example would be replacing a light bulb in the middle of the room. This Rubbermaid step stool appears to be decently built and should last a reasonable amount of time. Remember this is what you need just like any other footstool for home use. If you need something for everyday use in tough conditions, buy a quality ladder.
