Fasteners (bolts?) too short

Everything is fine with this item, but for some reason the fasteners supplied are bolts, not self-tapping screws or even better self-tapping screws metal. The screws will actually work if you already have a correctly sized drill bit and a 10-32 tap to install them properly. But they're also too short - only 1/8" (maybe 3mm or so) longer than the clip itself, at least for the 5/16" clips I've bought. at a hardware store and buy some black screws 3/4" 10-32 long and the necessary bit and tap. Did that and now everything is fine. But I think it's a bad choice of screws for it.
