I bought a transparent satin doily on polyethylene. I fixed an old table. I think it's maple, but I'm not 100% sure. That was my first experience with poly. The previous owners had placed what appeared to be a hot pot on the table and left a very deep burn mark. First I sanded the entire table and sanded away the burn marks. Then I applied about four or five coats of this polymer. I bought cheap sponges from Revain. I simply sprinkled some product on the table, used a sponge applicator and applied it evenly with light strokes. I used a flashlight to shine it on the table to highlight any bubbles. I just lightly brushed the spot again with the sponge. This material dries fairly quickly, so you'll have to work fast. In general there were no problems with blisters. This could only happen if I applied too much product to the area. After the first coat is applied, the untreated wood will pick up the poly and fuzz. So after applying the first layer I used fine sandpaper and sanded it lightly with a few hand movements. I let it dry overnight between each layer. If the parts of the table got a bit rough between layers, just go over them lightly with sandpaper. Be sure to remove dust. I put polyethylene on the outside because the container says the fumes are toxic and not to be inhaled. I then let it dry for a few hours before bringing it indoors. I found the scent to be surprisingly very mild, even immediately after application. After drying, there was a slight odor. But it wasn't that bad. It's just the smell you get when you buy new furniture. I think that's what poly smells like. I just applied this poly and nothing else. I was very happy with the results. It really brought out the rich golden color of the maple and gave it a nice sheen and a subtle sheen. It was a real pleasure to buy just one product and get such results.
