The "beard" doesn't just fall apart, and lil like crazy. But it's ugly as sin. But don't tear it off - the whole hat will come apart at the seams. (For two dogs) One I fixed and the other I just cut off the thin, skinny, ugly. Like Uncle Sam's hats, they're fine.
