My 4 year old Kohler shower stopped producing hot water. I don't know exactly when this happened because I hardly ever use this shower. I found that the valve needed two parts. I ordered it first because I thought it would work. Both parts of the valve looked normal, but something was clearly wrong. I wanted to spend as little as possible so I made an educated guess and ordered it. When it arrived I installed it in about five minutes. I turned the water back on and NO HOT WATER #*#*#*#*. I needed another pressure balancer or just a pressure balancer. I ordered and installed a pressure compensation unit. Now everything works fine. I have not tried the old valve with the new balancer. This would probably work. Anyway, at least I have all new parts and hot water.
