Good basic table but top is marked up

Table is fine, lightweight and fits a relatively small space. Basically was what I wanted. But the top has a spot with black 'gunky' marks that I haven't been able to clean off. It seems like some kind of adhesive. Tried soap, alcohol, paint thinner, it remains. The box looked as if it had been re-taped making me wonder if someone had sent this table back due to the markings on the finish.
