If you're just starting out in rock climbing, especially bouldering, you probably need a bigger chalk bag. It works as advertised as a finger chalk pouch, but I can barely accommodate my entire hand with the tip fully extended, resulting in an uncomfortable super chalk. The only reason to take the star off is that sometimes the lace gets a bit tight as some of the inner fabric gets pulled through the small hole when you try to tighten it. It's not really important, but it can be a little annoying. .
