This sharpener rescued some old battered straight edge steak knives from the mid 60's that hung in drawers for decades (I practiced sharpening them as a kid and I didn't work very well). It gives a very sharp edge to every knife I've used it with, but it's not necessarily the prettiest edge due to the micro-scratches it leaves. For this reason I didn't want to use it for my "fancy" knives. Also, and this is very important if your knife isn't already sharpened to a precise angle, any groove you use (and pretty much none of mine) seems to require an inordinate number of strokes (e.g. up to 20 times). . or more than the guide recommends) to actually re-sharpen the blade so you can give it a nice edge. . Just keep grinding; eventually you will get there.
