I gave five stars because it is exactly what I need. You should do some serious research before investing in such things. 1) I am NOT using this for a media server, although it may serve that purpose. 2) See 1. :) So. This is how I use it and in what situation it gets 5 out of 5 from me. * I have a mirrored system with RAID 1. That means I have TWO 8TB drives because mirroring duplicates doesn't give more spaces. *Synology unit is powered off 5 days a week.*On Saturday/Sunday we do a full backup of all 5 computers in the house using Acronis software.*PLEASE ENSURE THAT ANY BACKUP SYSTEM YOU ARE USING HAS YOUR DOWNLOADING MAY ALLOW FAILURE SYSTEM HOW Synology NAS WANT TO SEE IT!* I also back up my Google Cloud stuff once a week (just in case I do something stupid when I delete something)* I also separately back up all my music and photos, since they are not, and exclude them from weekly backups.* Once all of this data is backed up, I either shut down the system until next week or unplug my 8TB USB 3.0 external drive once a month from a remote location to secure the entire NAS in case of fire. or some other disaster. So far, the defective HD could be repaired without any problems.
