Review on Hypertech 11281 Chevrolet Pontiac Firebird by Ricky Mills

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Completely different driving with this chip.

5 STARS! It can't get any better. I bought a refurbished ECM for this chip so I can swap back and forth to see if I notice a difference. Well, the difference is how the engine works right after launch, and it gets even better from that moment. When you start the engine, it runs much smoother. If you release the clutch and coast in first gear, it rolls much smoother. No harsh idle judder or stumbles. The difference in performance is amazing. I don't have a drag lane closer than 100 miles from where I live, so I can't give track times, but from stop light to stop light on the freeway where I test many cars, this Camaro ran consistently at a speed of 70 miles per Hour. Now it's doing just over 80mph and seems to be picking up speed. The speedometer only goes to 85 mph so I'll have to try somewhere else soon. Another thing now what speed. I guess there's no upper limit, but I have no idea how fast I'm going. The speedometer only reads 85 mph, but the original chip continues to pick up speed. The difference is that the original chip allows you to rev up to 4000 in 4th gear and then shift to 5th gear and not accelerate. The chip limits you to what's programmed into it (I think 110 mph or so) because my friend's 89 Ford Taurus hits 113 on his speedometer next to me and he's slowly overtaking me no matter if I change my shirt to 4th Leave place or stay in 5th place . It stays a mile or two faster than the 82 Z28 Camaro chip. With this chip, the revs go to redline in 4th gear and then pick up speed further in 5th gear, but the car gets unsteady by observing things like the hood and the feel of the car. So I have no idea how fast it will go now but from now on the car needs to be upgraded to be safe.

Pros
  • quick change
Cons
  • almost never
