Throw away your bow and stern straps
I have a horizontal Tulley rack that supports kayaks on both sides. Usually you have to tie them around the rack a few times and then tie the kayaks to the bumpers front and back. These stoppers compress the kayaks on the outside of the car (kayaks on the side). Combined with a simple strap, canoes are held so tightly that they cannot be rotated out of line. I no longer attach bow and stern straps to the bumpers. They are easy to install and easy to use.
