I was really impressed with this bag! We were moving from California to Missouri, but did a lot of driving and camping. I can confirm that you can use this on a car without a roof rack. The straps go through the doors and connect inside. You do have to figure out what to do with the excess part of the straps. The container will tend to slide toward the back of your roof so I recommend angling the forward straps forward at a 45 degree angle into the doors rather than 90°. The pad that goes on the roof and under the container can flap in the wind so I recommend rolling up the excess and cinching it down with zip…

Cons:- It's really difficult to tighten the straps. My roof rack only fits some proprietary mount, so we had to loop it through the doors into the interior. The mechanism is tough to manage and the straps were never tight enough for my liking. This product endured a 3,300 mile trip at about 80 MPH from the Midwest to the West and back, including through Utah, Wyoming and Nebraska during a winter storm. It faired well and did not leak. I did notice that our gas mileage was a little lower than usual, probably due to the fact that a cargo bag is not as aerodynamic as a hard-shell cargo box. But it was definitely worth the money. The actual carrier was good but the instructions did not work with the straps provided. If I had not had 4 grab handles to use inside the car I would not have been able to use it. Additionally, water was dripping from the straps on us at all 4 places they came into the car as it was raining for 7 hours of the trip. Not great.
