As other reviews say the varnish covers the entire tool - handle, brass collar and blade. They're not particularly sharp. At the same time, these are strong and THICK scrapers for the bowl. My previous shell scrapers were converted from cone chisels on a bench grinder and they wobbled and flexed horribly. These scrapers don't wobble at all. They have the bulk of my $100 3/4 in the Robert Sorby Bowl Gouge and feel just as sturdy. I'm sure the metal isn't up to the same standard, but they sharpen easily and seem to retain their sharpness. Despite the terrible coating on the blade and the initially dull edge, I give this product 5 stars. Even the best tools need sharpening upon receipt, and for $25 I'm glad I didn't buy a more expensive product.
