I bought an 8 year old cast iron table saw that was never used. It sat in an unconditioned barn for years and the cast iron table was covered in rust. I first tried an oil based rust remover spray and it got rid of the thickest rust but I wanted the top to be like new again so I figured sanding would help. I started with a good quality 3M 120 grit and went through about 8 grinding wheels before progressing to the 220 grit. Then I used this POLIWELL pack and used three discs each of 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500 and 2000 to make a cast iron surface almost mirror smooth before sealing the top with Glide Cote. It worked the way I thought it would!
