The holes are 1 1/2 inches apart, fitting snugly on either side of the peg, not the center of the peg!
Item I bought for my daughter who is going to college for her new pillow. I didn't expect the holes to be an inch and a half apart. So when you find the stud you can run the screws into both sides of the stud and not in the middle like you should. I would look elsewhere, it's too difficult to get the two screws of the brackets to both hit a stud in the wall (like you should for something heavy). They're well made, just badly designed.
