Well-made fun plane with a learning curve

This is my first round bottom razor so I can only compare it to the flat bottom wire razors I'm familiar with. On arrival I did the default setting which involves leveling the back of the blade and sharpening with progressive stones to a 6000 grit water stone. I also smoothed the finish of the base and waxed it so it slides smoothly over the wood and rusts Not. It seems to me that it is well made with a fit and finish befitting an instrument in this price range. Overall I am very satisfied with the handling of the tool and the blade. It took trial, error, and practice to figure out how this guy worked best for me. It takes a bit more finesse than my flat bottom razors to use this tool. I find that in many situations it is helpful to distort the angle of the cut and roll into the cut, making small initial cuts first and repeating a few strokes before attempting to return the blade to its original position. While it requires an understanding of the grain of the wood and some patience, I was soon getting satisfactory chips most of the time. The blade adjusters are really good, but getting the depth right requires a sensitive hand. just a touch anyway. I've found that in some situations, leaving a page a bit wider works well, e.g. B. for spoon shaping when making narrow cuts on rounded shapes. I had to figure out hand position and pressure, weather to push or pull, and when to roll the tool or hold it straight before I had great success. Be patient and practice on scrap wood first.
