With the company being sued

I poisoned myself by relying on these filters. I noticed that the NYT determined that the filters only work at 1000 liters. I had heavy iron deposits in my tap water, I didn't realize how bad it was. I've been filtering water with these filters for the last two years. I've been ill for the past few months. I went to the doctors and they found that I had high levels of iron, which is usually a sign of liver failure. I got home, checked on the Berkey and noticed rust on the top. Although the sludge didn't reach the bottom, I firmly believe that a significant amount of iron got into my drinking water. I stopped using it and started buying bottled water, it's the only thing I've changed in my life and now my iron levels are back to normal and I feel better. Although I'm not entirely better, and if I'm not better I will sue. They are not NSF certified and give BS reasons for doing so. It's actually sad, given the price of these things you hope they're at least honest, and based on testing and the NYT article, as well as my personal experience, that doesn't appear to be the case. You can get a Lifesaver canister for about $100 less, it's more work but it works. I also think if you were to use this on a faucet since I was a ceramic filter it might do a better job of getting rid of metals but I should probably just go back to my situation.

Pros
  • Nice to use
Cons
