This deluxe set is definitely an improvement over the old 'standard' set we had with hollow pieces about 10 years ago. I think the old vintage sets were hollow and there were many versions over the years. I just love the feel of solid objects in this set. Classic fun game.1. The tiles are a bit thinner and smaller, but solid. Much better tactile sensations.2. The tile trays alone make this set worthwhile. The trays are lightweight plastic, nothing fancy but holds 10 tiles. If you play with two people, each of you can use 2 trays, which can be handy. Once you've balanced the tiles on the edge, you'll immediately understand what I'm talking about.3. The tiles are flat on the back but have a small brass "spinner" at the top. They serve three good purposes: a) They facilitate face-down shuffling. b) likely to result in lower surface friction during mixing. c) Make tile grabbing easier when drawing tiles.
