Review on Moen 16090 Chateau Collection Chrome Escutcheon Replacement for One-Handle Tub and Shower Faucets by Andrew Sticher

My old lady is trapped and angry water behind the tiles

Excellent product. It is made entirely of metal, not plastic, and is approximately 1 inch larger than the original 1972 Moen Chateau pickguard it replaced. Most importantly, this piece has very heavy padding on the back to prevent water from dripping behind the plate and it also has a drainage hole on the bottom. The original pad had no drainage hole and was a very thin pad. When my old one was removed I saw the back was full of hard water deposits so it was definitely holding water on the wall. who knew There is a mysterious leak behind my shower room wall and no access panel so I decided to try replacing all the trim before tearing up the walls. I don't know if I solved the whole problem permanently, but this definitely took care of part of it. My plumber also sealed the outside edge (being careful not to flood the drain hole). I also asked him to install a new spout for the tub and shower. Both had large open slots where the tube protruded from the wall to which the pieces were screwed. Of course, the inside of those holes was wet! You will need to seal these holes behind the brackets with sealant or putty and then install the new bracket. So if you have an old bathroom and can't do a full demo/remodel, this is an inexpensive thing to try first.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Almost everything is fine
