I have all 3 grades in my freshwater sump to minimize maintenance and am very satisfied. The blue is great at trapping large particles (food, leaves etc) and the shrimp cling to it and I haven't had to clean it in over 6 months. The green filter is next in line and seems to do the most work when it comes to fish waste, it's the one that needs cleaning the most. I installed the black filter last, it's good enough to be used as a drip tray over the biobeads or as a final step to remove haze or haze from other interference, good enough that I didn't need a filter thread at all. I just have the blue in a canister in another tank before the biomedium and it does the job, although I think if I had to only use one most of the time I would use green now; the black one would have to be cleaned too often on its own.
