Review on πŸŒ‘ Noctua NH-U9S chromax.Black: Premium 92mm Single-Tower CPU Cooler in Sleek Black Design by Daveon Jumps

It's Noctua and it's black

I love that Noctua has started making their coolers in black instead of the horrible brown and beige. The name is known for its quality. They're a bit pricey, but generally you get what you pay for. This cooler was the largest cooler I could fit into the case I chose (Rajintek Metis). It cools the 11600K and keeps the CPU below the mid-80s even under desktop load. It usually idles at 32. It's MUCH quieter than the Evo 212 and cools a lot better. I don't think this will come as a surprise to those who follow the reviews and performance tests of the various air coolers available. It doesn't cool the processor at all during overclocking. I wasn't expecting it so it wasn't a surprise. The biggest downside I found with this cooler has to do with its RAM compatibility. The Noctua website has a compatibility "search" as well as lots of other information about each cooler and the processor you plan to use with it. It states that it is compatible with all types of RAM on all types of motherboards. Well, due to the RAM slot protrusion, this is normal as it is not. However, the problem you have is that the top of the sticks is higher than the bottom of the fan case unless you are using very shallow RAM. For example, some Corsair Vengeance RGB sticks were large enough to be placed in front of a fan. I ended up using some XPGs that have a slight V-shaped design on the heatsink and fit right into the fan curve without getting in the way. I didn't expect higher RAM to cause cooling issues but didn't really test it as its ergonomics (looks) just annoyed me. Installs simple, great instructions, the site has a lot of information about them and their abilities even if they don't use the "TDP" standard (confusing as it is). There are more reliable and obviously much larger coolers in their range, but if you have space issues (particularly height) this is a good alternative. The only other cooler I could find was a similarly sized BeQuiet, so I went with what I know is good.

Pros
  • CPU fan
Cons
  • sad packaging
