A cheap part saved me from a costly repair or replacement (Gas Vortex Dryer)

This did a great job fixing my dryer and I only had one small issue with it which I later addressed will explain. I will describe my symptoms below so others can see my situation and decide if they need this detail. I have a whirlpool dryer that is included in my home rent but is not "covered" or guaranteed by the landlord. It's (obviously) a gas dryer. It's pretty basic, but it has a sensor-based setting (hot or cold) as well as a default timer-based setting. That's pretty much all a dryer can do - pretty basic, like I said. I tested every component of the dryer by testing them with a multimeter. Everything has been checked for functionality. I spent a lot of time assembling and disassembling the dryer. During my trials and tribulations, I've learned a lot about dryer repairs. It was not possible to invite a mechanic as most offered ONLY 100-150 EXIT. Not to mention the real details and work. Here are my symptoms. No heat and humidity sensor settings do not work. Nothing was pinched. The gas line worked and was open. Timed drying worked but no heat. However, the automatic dryness detection worked forever. Actually I forgot to turn it off before my weekend trip and when we got home it was still working. The clothes eventually dry, but the dryer does not stop after drying. Even when I look through the peephole, the igniter increases in brightness, becomes very bright, and then goes out without igniting the gas or creating a flame. I also didn't smell any gas or hear a valve opening click. It actually happened twice, but after a week or two it started working again. This time the problem persisted for several months. As I said, I checked every detail and the resistance was what I expected from the videos and manuals. I checked the high limit thermostat, fuse, igniter, temp sensor, solenoids, igniter and another part I can't remember the name of. I have never found a humidity sensor or a thermistor. I dropped the detonator while spinning and it broke immediately. I replaced it with a $15 part here at Revain and it worked great, but my problem persisted. It would be great if this was the problematic part and I accidentally fixed it. But it was pretty clear that the detonator was working as it was glowing quite brightly. Also, it turned on, so it probably wasn't the temp sensor. Everything pointed to the solenoids or the entire gas valve assembly. However, the coils worked electrically and delivered correct resistance values at all 3 contact points. I said "hell" and just replaced the coils with these. It was only $10 after all, so I wouldn't have lost too much if it didn't work. My dryer worked great the first time and has worked ever since. The flame went on, I received heat and the dryer automatically shut off when the laundry was dry. The only downside to this particular product was that some of the pins were bent almost 90 degrees. Not so bad that I can't bend them back and get them to work. but it's still pretty sketchy. They should probably fix any shipping and/or handling issues that led to this. That's why it got 4 stars instead of 5. Since then I've danced a little every now and then. The $10 part saved me from buying a new dryer for $400 or more and figuring out what to do with the old one (since it's not mine). And before you ask, I took it to the landlord. and he basically ignored me. As far as I know, landlords aren't required to guarantee equipment, so legally I couldn't do anything, and he still wasn't good enough to take care of it.

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Slightly dented
